What an inspiring aftrenoon we had at the 7th edition of Ethnokino in Locarno! with the Wyss Academy for Nature and 2291.
A gathering around film, stories, community and the question of how we can shape a more inclusive future together. We were honoured to hear powerful Vision Talks from:
Christian Häuselmann, founder of 2291 and creator of the Future Stones, now visible in Locarno, invited us to reflect on the future and the possibilities that lie ahead. Christian shared how, after editing a volume featuring inspiring Swiss thought leaders and changemakers, he went on to initiate the Impact Films Day under the Imagination Shorts concept, ultimately paving the way for EthnoKino’s journey to Locarno.
Tatjana Von Steiger, initiator of the changemakers programme at the Wyss Academy for Nature, reminded us of the importance of authoring our own story — rather than allowing others to define it for us talked as films not being an end result, but as the beginning of a new journey, opening pathways toward what lies ahead.
And Eda Elif Tibet shared her vision in founding the EthnoKino Festival of building a global mov(i)ement that amplifies marginalized peoples, local communities and Indigenous voices across five continents.
Tony Majdalani added another unforgettable layer to the afternoon, creating music that literally bridges cultures, bringing together the Swiss hang drum, the Brazilian berimbau and Arabic melodies. A beautiful reminder that cultures don't have to compete; they can meet, listen and create something new together.
The evening continued with a moving Q&A with Malagasy filmmaker Rojombolatiana RANDRIANARIVELO, around his film Renala — The Caring Mother. The conversation brought us closer to the story, the filmmaker and the realities behind the work. Followed by a warm networking apéro at Teatro Paravento — a space where conversations continued. And then came a beautiful red-carpet moment, with Rojo accompanied by his partner Clara Diebold and myself.
We also heard from Naveen Shams, PhD, who shared his vision for the Kaleido community and extended the invitation to the upcoming retreat, taking place 19–23 August in Hasliberg.
