6TH ETHNOKINO MEIRINGEN 9-11 OCTOBER
Two Days of Film, Dialogue, and Encounters in the Heart of the Bernese Oberland
From 11 to 13 October 2026, the 6th EthnoKino Film Festival brought its Love & Land edition to the beautiful alpine town of Meiringen, transforming Kino Meiringen into a vibrant space for cinematic storytelling, intercultural exchange, and meaningful encounters.
The festival opened with two compelling films, Live to Work by Alfonso Gordillo and Proceed to Rescue by Enrico Bachmann. Following the screenings, EthnoKino Festival Director Eda Elif Tibet and Peter Fleer from the Kino Meiringen collective facilitated an engaging Q&A with both filmmakers, inviting audiences to explore the stories, creative processes, and questions behind their works.
The evening continued with Bajau Laut by Joe Peter, a poetic and visually evocative film portraying the lives of the stateless sea nomads of Borneo. Bringing distant worlds into conversation with the Swiss Alps, the screening beautifully captured EthnoKino's commitment to cinema that crosses geographical and cultural boundaries.
And, of course, no EthnoKino Meiringen would be complete without the legendary apéro by Baba Food! Once again, Mediterranean flavours brought warmth and conviviality to the alpine town, turning the festival into a celebration of cinema, food, friendship, and community.
The following day featured an inspiring Q&A with the directors Susan Thieme and Jinat Hossain of Who Speaks for Us, a powerful research film exploring questions of voice, representation, and belonging across Nepal and Bangladesh. Beyond the cinema, the visiting filmmakers were invited on an excursion to the breathtaking Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht), where the dramatic alpine landscape offered another kind of storytelling, shaped by water, stone, and geological time.
The festival concluded with Territory di Pulio, bringing days of cinematic encounters to a memorable close.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the Kino Meiringen collective, Peter Fleer, Baba Food by Mert Dagli, our wonderful filmmakers, volunteers, and audiences for making this edition such a warm and memorable gathering.
Until next year, when more stories, landscapes, and unexpected encounters await!
